  • Department: Crop and Soil Sciences
  • Title: Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center
  • Funding Agency: U.S. Dept. of Energy
  • Amount of grant: $1,700,000
  • Summary: Biofuel sustainability research at MSU will address carbon cycling, water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with biofuel cropping systems. Researchers will develop complex modeling technology, using intricate parallel computing to integrate satellite imagery and land use information into mathematical models of biofuel production for the entire United States. The models, based on results from experiments in the field, will allow researchers and decision-makers to envision possible answers to questions about various biofuel crops. Quantitative models, together with the underlying field research, will allow investigators to design biofuel cropping systems that are both profitable and environmentally sustainable. MSU researchers will conduct this research as a partner in the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC), which received a total of $8.099 million in ARRA funds for this and other projects.
